Emergency orthodontics
While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, they can happen. Knowing what to do when one occurs can make a difference in your overall outcome and health.
How to differentiate true emergencies?
Orthodontic emergencies can result from an accident or a sports injury. No matter how they occur, try to remain calm and contact your orthodontist as soon as possible.
It’s important to understand how to differentiate true emergencies. Some common non-emergencies include:
- Archwire that has popped out of place.
- Cracked or broken aligners.
- Broken appliance.
- Discomfort from a metal piece or wire on your braces.
- Loose braces bracket.
These are all non-critical situations because they can easily be managed at home or until your next orthodontist appointment.
For general soreness and discomfort, regularly rinsing your mouth with one teaspoon of salt mixed into a glass of warm water and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can provide relief. Similarly, in situations where the wiring has popped out of place, using a temporary mouth protectant or orthodontic wax can help you keep it in place until your next appointment. If your wiring is popped out and you can’t get it back in place, you can clip it and then apply some wax on top.
What is an orthodontic emergency?
More critical emergencies that would require immediate attention from your orthodontist would be a bracket that is off-center due to adhesive failure. This is an emergency because when it happens, your braces will become loose and will no longer be repositioning your teeth like they should.
Another emergency, although rare, would be accidentally swallowing a piece of your appliance. If this occurs, remember to stay calm, and contact your orthodontist right away.
